Dear Brothers Matt, Fr. Patrick, and Noel,
I am happy for you brothers that you have found the faith in Orthodoxy. I am saddened that the church betrayed you in so much of what it has failed to give. I am more saddened that some people really failed to live with the sort of personal integrity that moved them deeper into Christ as seekers. The CEC failed many of us in so many ways. But at the core many of us failed ourselves and Jesus by simply listening and following leaders and not having the courage to speak up. What the church failed to give was available in resources outside if we availed ourselves to it. We had all the writings of the Fathers, the Philokalia, good resources than many failed to really put into practice.
I love the Orthodox Faith, and may even be among you once day, but I have also lived around orthodox Greeks all my life. And believe me, it is quite possible to be catechized and attend the service regularly and gamble and cheat on your wife there too. The depth of orthodoxy in America is shallower among many orthodox then it is among many sincere evangelicals. This calls for repentance - a call that is not reserved for non-orthodox. Orthodoxy, as you know, is not reduced to dogma, it is a life. it is not found in parroting tonal chant, it is in guarding the thoughts of the heart, of nepsis, of becoming aware of the movements of the passions and how they inhibit union with Christ. One could have practiced this anywhere. This is not restrained to a liturgy, it is a life.
This was an interesting show. Thank you!
Fr. Matt,
While you make some observant generalizations that could be applied to any group of people in any community, the one big question that I had to answer, and the one that you and all in the CEC still need to, is; “Whose kingdom am I building?” If your answer is - “God’s,” then the next question is; “Do the Councils of the Church, historic tradition, the Scriptures and the broader Church Catholic support you?” the answer is clearly - “NO they do not!” You cannot claim to be Catholic when the entire historic Catholic world rejects you - that is not catholicism. The councils of the Church call all to cease being schismatic and return to the Unity of the Church. The church will not be reformed from without - only from within. We are all called to exercise our spiritual gifts within Christ’s Church… Orthodoxy invites you home with open and welcome arms. Come home brother.
Much love,
Fr. Ken
